Chris Berry

General Manager

Why I joined Arriva?

One reason I joined Arriva was to start a career with a large company and hopefully progress. Arriva recognised my skills and through hard work I managed to move up the career ladder. I had several family members work for the company, all of which recommended it as a great place to work. My father had been a bus driver for a large part of his life and had worked for various companies but said Arriva valued and recognised their employees the most which was why I chose Arriva.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

Working for Arriva is rewarding and gives great job satisfaction at the same time. You are trusted to do the right thing and challenged to be the best version of yourself you can be. You always be supported in what you do whether you chose to remain as a driver or try to progress throughout the business. You gain great friendships through your peers and become really close with those you work with.

Linsey Frostick

General Manager

Why I joined Arriva?

I was made redundant from my previous role and initially didn’t know exactly what I was applying for but from the first interview I could tell that it was a people focused environment and everyone was welcoming. I started as a Customer Service manager with a team of two and I am now a General Manager responsible for a team of over 300, I was right, it was all about the people!

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

Whenever anyone asks me that, I always give the same response, “we work hard and play hard” and by that I mean that the job is busy, challenging and rewarding but you can have fun along the way and the team I work with are the best in the business and really make work enjoyable. Over the years I have seen many changes, but the commitment from local teams never waivers, the work load doesn’t change either but I very much enjoy having a full and busy day.

Jack Grove

Operations Manager

Why I joined Arriva?

I joined Arriva (re-joined actually!) to be part of a diverse operator of local bus services rich in both heritage and forward-thinking. I am proud of the services we provide, which are ever-changing and adaptive to new technologies and evolving demand.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

As much as our network evolves, so do our employees. We are encouraged and empowered in our roles, and I would be quick to dispel the rumour that you are unable to shape and influence a business of this size. I enjoy the autonomy afford to me and sharing of best practice.

Ben Callaghan

Graduate

Why I joined Arriva?

I applied to join the Arriva Graduate Scheme in March 2017 after seeing it advertised by the careers centre at my university. My background at university was politics, so I was not sure what to expect when I was invited to assessment centre held in Derby a month later. There was a warm welcome when I arrived at which helped put me at ease for the tasks and interviews that would follow. It gave off the impression that this is a good company to work for and this was supported by speaking to people who were already on the scheme. After the final interview, when I was offered a place on the scheme, I accepted it straight away.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

When I joined Arriva, the only experience of the transport industry that I had was that I was regular user of public transport. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I walked into a bus depot for the first time. I received a very warm welcome from everyone and felt like a member of the team from day one. I’ve now been with Arriva for just over a year and I have worked in many different departments – Operations, Engineering, Commercial, Marketing, Risk and Finance and all have been an eye opening experience. I’ve received my PCV licence and have driven in service in Cannock, Stafford and Derby and now I’m in an Acting Operations Manager role at Tamworth depot.

Ian Powell

Service Quality Leader / Performance Team Leader

Why I joined Arriva?

I originally joined Arriva as a stop gap some 20 years ago, after being in the company for a short while I decided that it was not so bad being a bus Driver and that Arriva where in fact a good company to work for.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

Working for Arriva is like working for a big family, I also find that it is a company that will back you all the way if you show that you have ambition and want to move on within the company. If you want to shine they will help you.

Michael Wood

Driver

Why I joined Arriva?

I loved buses and working outside so thought I’d give it a shot to see what it was like.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

It’s honestly the best job I’ve ever had. I get to enjoy driving, I am not stuck in an office all day and working at the depot is like being part of a little family. You all know each other and make friendships.

Jamil Khattak

Deputy Operating Manager

Why I joined Arriva?

I joined Arriva after leaving university and starting up a family. I needed a full time job. I very quickly became a controller and 3 years later a manger.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

I am fascinated about how much effort goes into running a bus service. In the bus industry no two days are same and there is always something or someone exciting helping you to make the best of work.

Laura Hill

Engineering Graduate

Why I joined Arriva?

I originally applied for a summer internship with Arriva Midlands to gain engineering related work experience in between studying for my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. I chose Arriva because I have a real interest in transport and vehicle engineering and because the company has a great reputation for recruiting and developing graduates. I was instantly welcomed into the business and given some interesting and worthwhile projects to get stuck into. At the end of the internship I was offered a part time position as a project engineer and on completion of my studies I moved to London to join Arriva’s Graduate Scheme.

What’s it like to work for Arriva?

Working at Arriva is diverse, stimulating and rewarding. I have completed placements in many different areas of the business and worked on a number of engineering related projects. I travel around many different Arriva sites and everywhere I go the people are really friendly and make you feel welcome. I attend training events with the other graduates, some of which are held in other countries where Arriva operates. It’s a great opportunity to visit a new city and experience what our colleagues do elsewhere in Europe. There are lots of training opportunities available and a couple of highlights for me have been gaining my PCV licence and qualifying as an IRTEC accredited Service and Maintenance Technician. As an Engineering Graduate it’s really important to me to gain as much technical knowledge of the vehicles as possible and I try to get out in the workshop as much as I can. The support and guidance you receive on the Graduate Scheme is excellent and graduates have the opportunity to shape the scheme to meet their individual interests and career goals. I have really enjoyed my time with Arriva so far and look forward to seeing what the future holds.
