About our Apprentices

At Arriva, our Engineers keep our buses moving and the communities we serve connected. Whether that's getting children to school or commuters to work. As an Apprentice Engineer you'll work alongside a close-knit team of experienced Electricians, Technicians and Engineers who'll mentor you every step of the way. And together you'll keep our buses running at their very best.

This is a 4-year programme working towards a Bus and Coach Technician L3 qualification covering the inspection, diagnosis and testing of buses and coaches. The work ranges from performing simple tasks, like replacing a part to solving complex faults often using diagnostic equipment. The tasks faced by a technician are constantly changing as vehicles become more complex with the introduction of new technologies and differing fuel types.

We're looking for those with an inquisitive mindset who love solving problems and don't mind getting their hands dirty. As an Apprentice with us, you'll earn £7.50 per hour in your first year, raising year-on-year in line with National Minimum wage and progress through the course.

Our first intake of Apprentices in 2025 will be starting in April, with a further intake in September.

Our Partnership with GTG Training

Arriva is in partnership with GTG to provide our Apprentices with industry-leading training. Based in Wolverhampton and Glasgow, you'll spend 1 week every 6 weeks at their state-of-the art, modern facilities. GTG are leaders in the industry, providing exceptional training and setting you up for future success in employment. With GTG, you'll be ahead of the game, making you more employable at the end of your apprenticeship.

Don't worry - all expenses are paid and we'll arrange your travel and hotel stay, as well as provide transportation to get you there and back to your hotel.

About you

To join us as an apprentice you will need GCSEs or equivalent at Grade C (or above) or Grade 4 (or above) in both English and Maths as well as pass a pre-employment medical. This is  a programme designed for people at every stage in life. It could be your first venture into work after finishing school, or the exciting career move you’ve been looking for. Whatever your motivation, we’re looking for those with an inquisitive mindset who love solving problems and don’t mind getting their hands dirty. Come aboard and engineer our future.

Our Process: What to expect

After you have submitted your application, one of our Recruiters will be in touch to invite you to complete an online technical test.

If you're successful following this stage, we will invite you along to meet with us as one of our depots for an assessment day - this gives you a chance to see where you might be working and find out more about the role.

Don't worry if this is all new to you, our dedicated Recruitment Team will support you through every step.

You will spend 80% of your time gaining hands-on, practical experience in one of our depots. A highly skilled & qualified technician will be your dedicated mentor on hand to coach and guide you in the workplace.
Alongside this you will be working towards an industry-recognised professional qualification with the support of a development coach from our training provider, GTG. They will be on hand to support with your learning and making sure you are on track.

Is there a job at the end of the apprenticeship?
Arriva want to continuously invest in their colleagues and on successful completion of the apprenticeship, we would intend on offering you a full-time position. With the right development, skills and knowledge you could progress into a range of more senior roles such as Engineering Team Leader, Manager or Master Technician. Many of our Engineering Management Team are former apprentices!
